GCC’s in India- Understand Global Capability Centres.

GCC’s in India- Understand Global Capability Centres.

Why is everyone suddenly talking about GCCs — when Gurgaon has had them for 15+ years?

If you drive past Cyber City or Shankar Chowk, you’ll see the big logos — Bank of America, American Express, RBS, Fidelity, Microsoft, HP, IHG.
These aren’t new. They’ve been here for over a decade.

Back then, we called them “captives” or “back-offices.”
They handled processing, support, customer service. Important work, yes — but not very glamorous.

In the last ~5–7 years, industry bodies (like NASSCOM, Zinnov, Deloitte) started branding them as “Global Capability Centres (GCCs)”.

The new name highlights that these centres are not just back-offices — they are now core innovation & capability hubs.

Fast forward to 2025, and suddenly the word “GCC” (Global Capability Centre) is everywhere.

Every real estate report says “GCCs driving office leasing demand.

Every city branding itself as the next GCC hub.

So what changed?

1️⃣ Rebranding: Captives → GCCs. A name that says: this is no longer just outsourcing, it’s about global capabilities.

2️⃣ Work evolved: From call centres and data entry → to AI/ML, product engineering, risk analytics, fintech innovation, aerospace R&D.
(Example: Amex & BoA in Gurgaon now run advanced analytics and global decision-making, not just back-office ops.)

3️⃣ Explosive growth: India now has 1,600+ GCCs, nearly half set up in the last 7 years. By 2030, they may employ 3 million people.

4️⃣ Investor confidence: Developers and consultants love the buzzword, because GCCs mean stable, long-term leasing demand.

The irony?

Gurgaon was home to GCCs long before the word became fashionable. Cyber City’s skyline has been powered by them for over a decade.

Next time you hear “GCCs driving demand”, remember:
This is not a new trend it’s an old story, rebranded and accelerated.
And Gurgaon has been part of it from Day 1.
